Overview

Bismuth subgallate is a yellow, odorless powder used primarily as an internal deodorant to reduce malodor from flatulence and stools. It is also employed for hemostasis in soft tissue surgery and has been investigated for wound healing and as a treatment for *Helicobacter pylori* infection, though it is not first-line therapy for the latter. The compound acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract due to its poor absorption, inhibiting colonic bacteria from producing odor-causing compounds by remaining within the GI lumen. Bismuth subgallate may also form various salts that bind to gastric mucus or ulcer bases, trigger secretion of protective factors like prostaglandins and epithelial growth factor (EGF), inhibit pepsin activity, protect mucosa from degradation, and promote ulcer healing[1][4][5][7]. Its precise antimicrobial and hemostatic mechanisms are not fully elucidated.
