Overview

Bismuth sulfide nanoparticles (Bi₂S₃ NPs) are an inorganic nanomaterial-based research platform being investigated for a range of biomedical applications, particularly in oncology and antibacterial therapy. They are not a single approved drug but a class of nanoparticles studied across numerous independent academic research groups. Bi₂S₃ NPs are notable for their high atomic number (Z) bismuth content, which provides excellent X-ray attenuation for computed tomography (CT) imaging and serves as a radiosensitizer to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy. Furthermore, they possess a high photothermal conversion capability, enabling their use as agents for photothermal therapy (PTT) to thermally ablate tumor cells under near-infrared (NIR) light. These nanoparticles are frequently functionalized with biocompatible coatings like bovine serum albumin (BSA) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) and can be loaded with chemotherapeutic drugs (e.g., methotrexate, curcumin) for synergistic chemo-photothermal or chemo-radiotherapy.
