Overview

Bismuth tribromophenate is an organobismuth compound with the molecular formula C18H6BiBr9O3 and a molecular weight of approximately 1198 g/mol[2][5][6]. It appears as a bright yellow powder that is slightly soluble in water and stable below 120°C[6]. Bismuth tribromophenate is primarily used as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant agent in wound care dressings—most notably under the brand name Xeroform—as well as for burns, lacerations, abrasions, skin graft sites, and hemorrhoids[2][4][5][9]. Its mechanism of action involves antimicrobial activity through the release of bismuth ions that disrupt microbial organelles and cellular functions; this leads to bacterial cell death and inhibition of pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans among others[5][7]. The compound also promotes wound healing by maintaining a moist environment when formulated with petrolatum[5].
