Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bisnorcymserine (BNC) is a small molecule experimental drug developed by scientists at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It belongs to the cymserine analog class and acts as a highly selective, reversible, and brain-specific inhibitor of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). By blocking the BChE enzyme, bisnorcymserine aims to augment acetylcholine activity in the brain, addressing the cognitive and functional deficits associated with the loss of acetylcholine production in Alzheimer's patients. The drug has been evaluated in a Phase I first-in-human clinical trial to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy older volunteers.
