Overview

Bisoctrizole is a broad-spectrum organic UV filter used in sunscreens and cosmetic products to protect the skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. Chemically known as methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol, it is a phenolic benzotriazole compound that acts as a hybrid sun-blocking agent—absorbing, reflecting, and scattering ultraviolet rays. Unlike most organic UV filters that dissolve in either oil or water phases of sunscreen formulations, bisoctrizole dissolves poorly in both and is therefore formulated as microfine particles suspended in the aqueous phase. It exhibits minimal photodegradation under sunlight and can stabilize other sunscreen actives such as octinoxate. Bisoctrizole shows very low skin penetration and lacks estrogenic effects in vitro. It has not been approved by the FDA for use in the United States but is approved for use up to 10% concentration in sunscreens within the European Union and other regions[1][2][3][8].
