Overview

Bisperoxovanadium(picolinate), commonly referred to as **bpV(pic)**, is a small molecule coordination complex that serves as a potent and relatively selective inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). It is most notably recognized for its high potency in inhibiting **PTEN (Phosphatase and tensin homolog)**, a major negative regulator of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. By inhibiting PTEN, bpV(pic) facilitates the accumulation of phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3), leading to the hyperactivation of Akt and subsequent downstream signaling that promotes cell survival, proliferation, and metabolic activity. Originally developed as an insulin-mimetic compound due to its ability to enhance insulin receptor phosphorylation, it has become a staple research tool in neurobiology and regenerative medicine. Preclinical studies have explored its potential in promoting axonal regeneration following spinal cord injury, providing neuroprotection in stroke models, and modulating glucose metabolism in diabetes research.
