Overview

BIT225 is a first-in-class small molecule antiviral drug developed by Biotron for the treatment of HIV-1 and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Its primary mechanism is inhibition of the HIV-1 Vpu ion channel (viroporin), which disrupts viral assembly and replication in monocyte-derived macrophages—key cellular reservoirs that are not effectively targeted by standard antiretroviral therapy. This unique action offers potential to reduce or clear latent viral reservoirs, a major barrier to HIV cure strategies. In addition to its activity against HIV-1, BIT225 has demonstrated antiviral effects against HCV and other viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 in preclinical models. Clinical trials have shown that adding BIT225 to combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) results in more rapid reduction of plasma viral load during the second phase of decay and modulates immune cell populations associated with chronic infection[2][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The drug has been well tolerated at tested doses.
