Overview

Bithionol sulfoxide is an anthelmintic agent primarily utilized in veterinary medicine for the treatment of trematode infections, specifically liver flukes (*Fasciola* species) and rumen flukes (*Paramphistomum* species) in ruminants such as cattle, sheep, and goats. As a derivative of bithionol, it functions by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria of the parasites, thereby depleting their energy reserves and leading to paralysis and death. It is commonly formulated as an oral bolus for livestock. While the parent compound bithionol has been used in humans for paragonimiasis, the sulfoxide form is predominantly associated with veterinary applications and is manufactured as a generic formulation by companies such as Ambrosia Remedies.
