The Bivalent COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine refers to a category of next-generation vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna to provide broader protection against SARS-CoV-2. These vaccines utilize lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the spike protein of two different strains: the original Wuhan-Hu-1 strain and an Omicron subvariant (initially BA.1, and subsequently BA.4/BA.5). By presenting two versions of the spike protein to the immune system, the vaccine elicits a broader neutralizing antibody response compared to the original monovalent vaccines. They were authorized by the FDA under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in late 2022 as booster doses to address the waning immunity and the emergence of immune-evasive variants.
