Overview

The Bivalent COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine is an intramuscularly administered booster vaccine designed to provide broad immunological protection against SARS-CoV-2. It utilizes a bivalent mRNA-based formulation that targets the spike proteins of both the ancestral (wild-type) strain and the Omicron BA.5 variant. By delivering genetic instructions to host cells, the vaccine induces the expression of these spike proteins, thereby stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies and eliciting a memory B cell response. In clinical trials sponsored by Zhongnan Hospital, this bivalent mRNA booster was evaluated for its immunogenicity and safety in adults, demonstrating higher neutralizing antibody titers against Omicron subvariants compared to aerosolized adenovirus-vectored vaccines, albeit with a higher incidence of transient adverse reactions.
