Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The bivalent hepatitis E virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine is a next-generation vaccine candidate designed to provide broad-spectrum protection against both conventional human hepatitis E virus (Paslahepevirus balayani or bHEV) and the emerging zoonotic threat, rat hepatitis E virus (Rocahepevirus ratti or rHEV). Developed by researchers at the University of Hong Kong, the vaccine incorporates recombinant bHEV-A4 p239 and rHEV p241 (HEV-C1 p241) proteins expressed in Escherichia coli, which self-assemble into virus-like particles. Adjuvanted with aluminum hydroxide, this bivalent formulation elicits robust, balanced IgG antibody responses and confers complete cross-species protection against both bHEV and rHEV challenges in animal models.
