Overview

This entry refers to the combination of all three major prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines: the bivalent, quadrivalent, and 9-valent vaccines. These are recombinant protein subunit vaccines designed to prevent infection by specific types of human papillomavirus, a virus responsible for cervical cancer, other anogenital cancers, oropharyngeal cancers, and genital warts. \n**Bivalent HPV Vaccine (2vHPV)** targets types 16 and 18—responsible for about 70% of cervical cancers. \n**Quadrivalent HPV Vaccine (4vHPV)** targets types 6, 11 (which cause most genital warts), as well as types 16 and 18. \n**9-Valent HPV Vaccine (9vHPV)** expands coverage to five additional oncogenic types—31, 33, 45, 52, and 58—covering approximately another ~20% of cervical cancers in addition to those covered by the earlier versions[2][3][5]. All three work by inducing neutralizing antibodies against L1 proteins from targeted viral strains using virus-like particles; they do not contain live virus or viral DNA[6]. The primary indication is prevention of persistent infection with high-risk oncogenic HPVs and associated diseases including precancerous lesions and cancer.
