Overview

The bivalent HPV16/18 vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine designed to prevent infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18, the two most common oncogenic strains responsible for approximately 70% of cervical cancer cases globally. The vaccine is composed of recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the L1 major capsid protein of each targeted HPV type. Upon administration, it induces a robust humoral immune response, generating neutralizing antibodies that prevent the virus from entering host epithelial cells. Major products in this category include GSK's Cervarix (produced in insect cells with the AS04 adjuvant system) and domestic Chinese vaccines such as Xiamen Innovax Biotech's Cecolin and Walvax Biotechnology's Walrinvax (both produced in Escherichia coli). It is primarily indicated for the prevention of cervical cancer, as well as vulvar and vaginal cancers and their associated precancerous lesions.
