Overview

bOPV is a live-attenuated, bivalent oral polio vaccine containing Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. It is used for active immunization against poliomyelitis caused by these two serotypes. Following the global withdrawal of trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) in 2016 due to the eradication of wild poliovirus type 2, bOPV became the primary tool in routine immunization and outbreak response in many countries. The vaccine works by inducing intestinal immunity, which prevents the shedding and transmission of the virus, as well as systemic immunity. Bilthoven Biologicals (a subsidiary of the Serum Institute of India) is a key developer and manufacturer of this vaccine.
