bivalent oral poliomyelitis vaccine (Bilthoven Biologicals)

The bivalent oral poliomyelitis vaccine (types 1 and 3), commonly referred to as bOPV, is a live attenuated oral vaccine developed to prevent poliomyelitis. It contains live attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus type 1 and type 3. Following the globally coordinated withdrawal of trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) in 2016 to eliminate the risk of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 outbreaks, bOPV became the primary oral vaccine used in routine childhood immunization and outbreak response. Administered orally as drops, the vaccine replicates in the intestine to induce robust systemic humoral immunity and local intestinal mucosal immunity, which is critical for stopping person-to-person transmission of wild polioviruses.
