Overview

Bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) is a live attenuated viral vaccine administered orally to protect against poliomyelitis caused by poliovirus types 1 and 3. It does not provide protection against type 2 poliovirus. The mechanism of action involves stimulating both intestinal and systemic immunity by introducing weakened forms of the virus, which elicit an immune response without causing disease. In April 2016, bOPV replaced trivalent OPV in global immunization programs after wild type 2 poliovirus was declared eradicated. The primary indication for bOPV is the prevention of paralytic polio as part of routine childhood immunization schedules[1][3][5][8].
