Overview

Bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) is a live-attenuated vaccine containing Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. It was developed as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to replace trivalent OPV (tOPV) following the eradication of wild poliovirus type 2, thereby reducing the risk of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) outbreaks. Administered orally, bOPV induces both systemic IgG and local mucosal IgA immunity in the intestinal tract, which is critical for preventing both paralytic disease and the transmission of the virus. It is widely used in routine immunization and mass vaccination campaigns, often in conjunction with inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) to ensure comprehensive protection against all three poliovirus serotypes.
