Overview

The type I + III oral live attenuated poliovirus vaccine, commonly referred to as bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV), is a vaccine containing live-attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. Developed by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS), this specific formulation is produced using the KMB17 human diploid cell line as a substrate. The vaccine is designed to provide mucosal and systemic immunity against poliomyelitis caused by these two serotypes, following the global withdrawal of the type 2 component from trivalent vaccines to prevent vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks. It is available in both liquid (drops) and sugar pill (dragee) formulations. In clinical practice, particularly in China, it is often administered in a sequential schedule following one or more doses of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) to optimize safety and immunogenicity while minimizing the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP).
