Overview

Bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) is a live attenuated vaccine containing Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3. It is indicated for active immunization against poliomyelitis caused by these two serotypes. The vaccine was introduced globally in 2016 as part of a coordinated switch to replace the trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) following the eradication of wild poliovirus type 2. It contains attenuated Sabin strains (Type 1: LSc, 2ab; Type 3: Leon 12a, 1b) propagated in human diploid cells (MRC-5) and stabilized with magnesium chloride. The vaccine induces both mucosal and systemic immunity, mimicking a natural infection to provide protection against paralytic poliomyelitis.
