Overview

The bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine types 1 and 3 (human diploid cell) is a live attenuated vaccine developed by Beijing Tiantan Biological Products for the prevention of poliomyelitis. It contains attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus Type 1 and Type 3, which are propagated in human diploid cells. This formulation was designed to support the global initiative to eradicate polio by replacing the trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) with a bivalent version, thereby eliminating the type 2 component associated with vaccine-derived paralytic polio. The vaccine works by inducing a mucosal and systemic immune response against poliovirus types 1 and 3. It has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials in China to establish its safety and immunogenicity, particularly in sequential schedules with inactivated poliovirus vaccines (IPV).
