Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The bivalent Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is a second-generation mRNA vaccine developed to broaden protection against SARS-CoV-2 by targeting both the original ancestral strain and the Omicron variant. It contains two mRNA components (tozinameran and famtozinameran) encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles, each encoding the viral spike protein. This specific formulation, often referred to as Comirnaty Original/Omicron BA.1, was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial sponsored by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute to assess its safety and immunogenicity as a second booster dose in healthy adults. The vaccine works by inducing the host's cells to produce spike proteins, thereby stimulating a robust immune response including the production of neutralizing antibodies and activation of T-cells.
