Overview

Bixalomer is a metal-free, nonabsorbable, amine-functional polymer phosphate binder used for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those on dialysis. It acts by selectively binding dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing its absorption and reducing serum phosphorus concentrations. Bixalomer was discovered by Ilypsa and further developed by Amgen and Astellas Pharma. It is approved and marketed in Japan under the brand name Kiklin for both dialysis-dependent and predialysis CKD patients with hyperphosphatemia[3][4][5][7].
