BJBR-BCMA-006 is an autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy targeting the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), developed by Beijing Boren Hospital. The treatment involves the extraction of a patient's T cells, which are then genetically engineered ex vivo using a viral vector to express a CAR specific for BCMA, a cell surface protein predominantly found on malignant plasma cells. Upon reinfusion, these modified T cells identify and eliminate BCMA-expressing cells. BJBR-BCMA-006 is primarily being investigated for the treatment of recurrent or refractory light chain (AL) amyloidosis, an orphan disease where clonal plasma cells produce misfolded light chain proteins that deposit in tissues. By targeting the underlying plasma cell clone, the therapy aims to achieve deep hematological responses and prevent further organ damage.
