Overview

BJY-801 is a small molecule P2X7 receptor antagonist developed by the Second Military Medical University (also known as the Naval Medical University) in China. It is primarily being investigated for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The P2X7 receptor is an ATP-gated ion channel expressed on microglia and other immune cells; its activation by high levels of extracellular ATP during ischemia triggers the assembly of the NLRP3 inflammasome and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1β and IL-18. By blocking this receptor, BJY-801 aims to suppress neuroinflammation, reduce brain edema, and limit neuronal death following an ischemic stroke. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and provide neuroprotection in various stroke models.
