BK-5 exosomes are extracellular vesicles derived from the lactic acid bacterium *Latilactobacillus sakei* strain BK-5, which was originally isolated from the flowers of *Aster koraiensis* (Korean starwort). These nanosized vesicles exhibit potent anti-inflammatory and skin-lightening activities. They work by suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), as well as inhibiting the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). In the context of skin health, BK-5 exosomes inhibit melanin biosynthesis by downregulating key melanogenesis-related proteins, including tyrosinase, TRP-1, TRP-2, and MITF. The underlying mechanism involves the inhibition of NF-κB and MAPK (including ERK, JNK, and p38) signaling pathways, making them potential candidates for pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical applications targeting inflammation and hyperpigmentation.
