Overview

BK-SE36 is a recombinant protein-based blood-stage malaria vaccine candidate developed by The Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University (BIKEN) and currently sponsored by Nobelpharma. The vaccine's active ingredient is the SE36 protein, which is derived from the N-terminal domain of the serine repeat antigen 5 (SERA5) of the *Plasmodium falciparum* Honduras 1 strain. The antigen is adsorbed to an aluminium hydroxide gel (AHG) adjuvant. BK-SE36 is designed to induce protective immunity against the erythrocytic stage of malaria by targeting SERA5, a protein expressed on the surface of infected erythrocytes that is critical for parasite egress and invasion. Clinical development has included Phase 1a trials in malaria-naive Japanese adults and Phase 1b trials in malaria-endemic regions such as Uganda and Burkina Faso. A next-generation formulation, BK-SE36/CpG, incorporates the CpG-ODN(K3) adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity.
