Overview
BK-virus specific CTLs are a type of adoptive cell therapy utilizing cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) that have been specifically engineered or expanded to recognize and eliminate cells infected with the BK polyomavirus (BKV). This therapy is primarily developed for immunocompromised patients, such as those who have undergone stem cell or organ transplantation, and are suffering from BK virus infections and related complications like hemorrhagic cystitis and nephropathy. The treatment aims to restore the patient's antiviral immunity, thereby reducing viral load and alleviating disease symptoms. The CTLs can be derived from either the patient's original stem cell donor or from unrelated, healthy donors, and can be prepared as an "off-the-shelf" product.
