Overview

BK2102 is a live-attenuated vaccine candidate for the prevention of COVID-19, developed by The Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University (BIKEN) in collaboration with Osaka University. Designed for intranasal administration, the vaccine aims to induce both mucosal and systemic immunity against SARS-CoV-2. It incorporates naturally occurring virulence-attenuating mutations in the NSP1, NSP14, spike, and ORF7-8 coding regions. Preclinical studies in animal models, including Syrian hamsters and transgenic mice, have shown that BK2102 elicits robust humoral and cellular immune responses, providing long-term protection (up to 364 days) against various strains, including the Omicron BA.5 variant, without causing lung tissue damage.
