Overview

BKR-013 is a proprietary, colon-targeted, sustained-release oral formulation of L-glutamine developed by BioKier for the treatment of metabolic diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes. The drug is designed to mimic the beneficial effects of metabolic surgery on glucose metabolism and cardiometabolic health without surgical intervention. Its mechanism involves stimulating L-cells in the lower gut to increase secretion of endogenous gut hormones such as GLP-1, PYY, GLP-2, and oxyntomodulin—hormones that regulate glucose metabolism, lipid levels, and appetite. This approach aims to correct deficiencies in these hormones observed in diabetes and obesity. BKR-013 has been evaluated in clinical trials for its effect on average daily glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes[1][2][3][4][7][8].
