Overview
BKR-019 is a preclinical-stage, small molecule therapeutic being developed by BioKier. It is an optimized, oral, colon-targeted formulation of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) naturally produced by gut microbiota. The drug is designed to deliver butyrate specifically to the colon to activate free fatty acid receptors, primarily Free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2/GPR43) and Free fatty acid receptor 3 (FFAR3/GPR41). This activation is intended to trigger the release of metabolic hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) from colonic L-cells, potentially addressing metabolic and inflammatory conditions. While development plans have been supported by SBIR grants, BKR-019 has not yet entered clinical development.
