Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BL-001 is an investigational, first-in-class, oral live biotherapeutic product (LBP) developed by Bloom Science. [1, 2] It consists of two rationally selected human gut microbial strains and is designed to replicate the therapeutic effects of the ketogenic diet without requiring dietary restrictions. [2, 3] The drug targets the gut-brain axis to modulate neurotransmitter levels, aiming to increase gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and restore its balance with glutamate. [2, 4] This mechanism is intended to reduce neuronal hyperexcitability, decrease neuroinflammation, and address oxidative stress. [2] BL-001 is being developed for neurological and metabolic disorders, including drug-resistant epilepsies like Dravet syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and obesity. [1, 2, 8]
