Overview

BL-2050 is a novel, orally available small molecule that was developed by BioLineRx for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. Licensed from Yissum, the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, BL-2050 was designed to act as a glucose-dependent insulin secretagogue. Pre-clinical studies indicated that the compound enhances insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells only in the presence of elevated glucose levels, potentially reducing the risk of hypoglycemia compared to traditional secretagogues. Additionally, BL-2050 demonstrated the ability to promote the proliferation of beta-cells and protect them from apoptosis in pre-clinical models, suggesting a potential disease-modifying effect by preserving or restoring functional beta-cell mass. Although its exact molecular target was described as novel and distinct from existing classes such as DPP-4 inhibitors or GLP-1 agonists, research suggested that its effects are mediated, at least in part, through the activation of the AMPK pathway. BioLineRx discontinued the development of BL-2050 in 2013 during the pre-clinical stage.
