Overview

BL-8020 is a proprietary **oral, fixed-dose combination drug composed of Ribavirin and Hydroxychloroquine** developed for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It was originated by Genoscience and licensed to BioLineRx for further development. The drug’s unique mechanism of action involves inhibition of HCV-induced autophagy, a host cellular process that the virus exploits for its replication. This mechanism is distinct from conventional anti-HCV drugs and supports the use of BL-8020 as an adjunctive therapy, particularly for interferon-free HCV regimens and for patients who have failed or relapsed on standard treatments. BL-8020 demonstrated synergistic antiviral effects in combination with other anti-HCV agents, potentially allowing reduced doses of standard drugs, lower side effect profile, and shorter treatment durations. Clinical development included Phase I/II trials in patients with chronic HCV infection of any genotype who previously failed or relapsed following standard-of-care therapy[1][2][3][7][11][12].
