bLAC (bovine lactalbumin complex) is a molecular complex consisting of bovine alpha-lactalbumin and a lipid, typically oleic acid. It is the bovine counterpart to HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells). bLAC exhibits selective cytotoxic activity against tumor cells and virus-infected cells while sparing healthy, differentiated cells. Its mechanism of action involves inducing apoptosis-like cell death through multiple pathways, including mitochondrial dysfunction and lysosomal membrane permeabilization. Developed by NatImmune, bLAC has been investigated in clinical trials for the topical treatment of cutaneous warts, particularly in immunocompromised populations such as kidney transplant recipients, where viral warts are often treatment-resistant.
