Black ginseng extract (BGE) is a specialized herbal preparation of *Panax ginseng* produced through repeated steaming and drying cycles (typically nine times). This process enhances the concentration of rare ginsenosides such as Rg3, Rk1, and Rg5, which are noted for their high bioavailability and pharmacological efficacy. Developed through collaboration between the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) and Chungnam National University, BGE is being investigated for its protective effects against particulate matter (PM)-induced lung inflammation. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of Transforming growth factor-beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) and the reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. This suppression leads to the inactivation of the NLRP3 inflammasome/caspase-1/pyroptosis pathway, thereby reducing the infiltration of immune cells and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the lungs.
