Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) is a plant whose fruit and leaves have been used both as food and in traditional medicine. The fruit is rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanins and contains vitamins A, B, C and E. Black raspberry has been studied for its potential chemopreventive properties; laboratory studies suggest it may protect against cancer by preventing DNA changes and inhibiting tumor blood supply. It also exhibits antioxidant activity and may have pro-apoptotic (promoting cell death in abnormal cells), anti-angiogenic (blocking new blood vessel formation), hypomethylating (modifying DNA methylation patterns), diuretic and astringent effects. Traditional uses include treatment of stomach pain or bleeding; the leaves are used as a uterine tonic during pregnancy preparation or to treat diarrhea or mouth inflammation[1][2][3][4][5].
