Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Black rice extract is a concentrated preparation derived from the grains of black rice (Oryza sativa L.), a pigmented variety of rice native to East Asia. The primary bioactive components in black rice extract are anthocyanins—flavonoid pigments responsible for its deep purple-black color and potent antioxidant properties[1][2][10]. Black rice extract also contains other phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, amino acids (such as tryptophan, phenylalanine, tyrosine), and carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin[4][8]. Mechanistically, the health effects attributed to black rice extract are largely due to its high antioxidant capacity; it scavenges free radicals and reduces oxidative stress in cells[7][9]. Preclinical studies suggest potential anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anticancer, neuroprotective (including possible upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor/BDNF), antimicrobial and cardiovascular benefits[2][5]. However, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses in humans is limited at this time. Black rice extract is commonly used as a dietary supplement or functional food ingredient rather than as an approved pharmaceutical drug.
