Overview

Black tea is a beverage and dietary supplement derived from the fully oxidized leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It contains caffeine, polyphenols (notably theaflavins and thearubigins), catechins, tannins, amino acids (such as L-theanine), vitamins (A, C, K), phenolic acids (caffeic acid, gallic acid), and other bioactive compounds[2][4]. Black tea acts primarily as a central nervous system stimulant due to its caffeine content. Its polyphenols have antioxidant properties and may contribute to cardiovascular health by promoting vasodilation through activation of potassium channels in blood vessels[7]. Black tea has been studied for potential benefits in alertness/energy enhancement, heart health, cholesterol reduction, metabolic support, gut health modulation via antioxidants/polyphenols/catechins/tannins/flavonoids[2][4], and possible antihypertensive effects via KCNQ5 potassium channel activation[7]. It is not an approved pharmaceutical drug but is widely consumed as a beverage or supplement.
