Blackcurrant emulsion is an investigational oral formulation of blackcurrant seed oil (BSO) derived from *Ribes nigrum*. It is primarily studied for the prevention and management of atopic dermatitis (DOID_3310), particularly in infants and high-risk pediatric populations. The oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), stearidonic acid (SDA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). In patients with atopic dermatitis, the activity of the delta-6 desaturase enzyme, which converts linoleic acid to GLA, is often impaired. By providing preformed GLA and SDA, the emulsion bypasses this metabolic bottleneck, increasing levels of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). DGLA serves as a precursor to the anti-inflammatory prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and is converted into 15-hydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (15-HETrE), which inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. The emulsion formulation is typically used in clinical trials to enhance the oral bioavailability and palatability of the seed oil for young children.
