Overview
BlastX is a topical antimicrobial wound gel developed by Next Science, indicated for the management of skin abrasions, lacerations, minor irritations, cuts, exit sites, and intact skin. It utilizes proprietary XBio Technology, which deconstructs biofilms by removing metal ions from the extracellular polymetric substance (EPS) matrix, making bacteria more vulnerable to eradication. The product contains benzalkonium chloride (0.13%) as the active antimicrobial component, along with polyethylene glycol 400, polyethylene glycol 3350, sodium citrate, citric acid, and water as excipients. The mechanism is described as disrupting biofilm integrity, promoting cell lysis in bacteria, and suppressing inflammation by inactivating matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and bacterial proteases, though only preservative antimicrobial activity is supported by its FDA-cleared indications.
