Blautia argi is an anaerobic bacterial strain within the Blautia genus being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Research has identified that the abundance of Blautia argi is significantly depleted in the gut microbiota of patients with Parkinson's disease. In preclinical models, specifically 6-OHDA-induced rat models, oral administration of Blautia argi has been shown to ameliorate motor impairments and exert neuroprotective effects. These effects include the preservation of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and a reduction in neuroinflammation, characterized by decreased astrocyte proliferation and lower expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). The therapeutic potential of Blautia argi is thought to be mediated through the modulation of the gut-brain axis and systemic anti-inflammatory pathways.
