Overview

Bleomycin is an antitumor antibiotic derived from the bacterium Streptomyces verticillus. It is primarily used in the treatment of various cancers including Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer. It may also be used for pleurodesis in malignant pleural effusions and occasionally for treating warts. Bleomycin acts by binding to DNA and causing strand breaks through free radical formation and inhibition of DNA synthesis. This leads to apoptosis (cell death) in rapidly dividing cells such as cancer cells. The drug is usually administered intravenously, intramuscularly, subcutaneously or intrapleurally. Common side effects include fever, weight loss, vomiting and skin rash; a serious risk is pulmonary toxicity leading to lung fibrosis[1][2][3].
