This combination chemotherapy regimen, often referred to by the acronym BMT in oncological literature, consists of three distinct cytotoxic agents: bleomycin, mitomycin C, and thiotepa. It has been primarily investigated and utilized as an intravesical therapy for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) to prevent tumor recurrence following transurethral resection. Bleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that induces DNA strand breaks through the generation of free radicals. Mitomycin C is an antitumor antibiotic that acts as a potent DNA cross-linker after enzymatic activation. Thiotepa is an ethylenimine-type alkylating agent that also forms DNA cross-links. By combining these agents, the regimen leverages multiple mechanisms of DNA damage to overcome cellular resistance and inhibit the proliferation of malignant cells.
