Overview

BLES (Bovine Lipid Extract Surfactant) is a natural surfactant derived from bovine lung lavage. It is primarily used in the treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in preterm infants, where it functions by replacing deficient endogenous pulmonary surfactant. This replacement helps to reduce alveolar surface tension, thereby improving lung compliance and gas exchange. BLES has also been investigated for its potential use in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), including ARDS associated with COVID-19, and as a vehicle for other medications like budesonide in extremely preterm infants.
