Overview

Bletilla striata, known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Bai Ji, is a medicinal orchid widely used for its hemostatic, wound-healing, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its primary bioactive constituents include polysaccharides (BSP), oligosaccharides (BSO), and various phenanthrenes such as militarine and BJ6. BSP is frequently investigated as a biomaterial for hydrogels and nanoparticles due to its mucoadhesive and biocompatible properties. The herb exerts therapeutic effects through multiple mechanisms, including the regulation of macrophage polarization (M1 to M2), suppression of the TLR4/NF-κB inflammatory pathway, and modulation of the gut-liver axis. It is clinically studied for conditions such as acute-on-chronic liver failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, and preclinically explored for ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and bacterial infections.
