Overview

**Bletilla striata polysaccharides** (BSP) are high-molecular-weight glucomannan polysaccharides extracted from the tubers of *Bletilla striata*, an orchid species with a long history of medicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine[1][6]. The principal chemical composition is mannose and glucose in a typical ratio ranging from approximately 2.4:1 to 4:1, with some species also containing small amounts of galactose[2][3]. These polysaccharides are primarily composed of β-1,4-linked mannosyl and glucosyl residues[1][2][7]. BSP represents the principal biologically active fraction of Bletilla, showing a spectrum of activities: immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic (wound healing), antifibrotic, antitumor, antioxidant, and hypoglycemic properties[2][3][4][7][9][10]. Regarding mechanisms, BSP can inhibit the activity of α-amylase and α-glucosidase (with competitive kinetics), modulate cytokine and NO production, decrease ROS via inhibition of NOX4, suppress TLR2 activation, and stimulate vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression[3][4][7]. BSP also demonstrates prebiotic and cell-proliferation effects and is used in some novel drug formulations as a functional biomaterial or nanocarrier[7]. BSP is primarily researched as a dietary supplement or traditional remedy, especially for wound healing, immune modulation, diabetes management, and as an adjunct in cancer therapy.
