Overview

**BLI-489 + piperacillin** is an investigational intravenous combination of a novel bicyclic penem β-lactamase inhibitor (BLI-489) and the extended-spectrum penicillin antibiotic piperacillin. BLI-489 inhibits class A, C, and D β-lactamases, overcoming resistance mechanisms in gram-negative bacteria that render piperacillin ineffective. The combination increases piperacillin’s antibacterial activity, especially against extended-spectrum β-lactamase- (ESBL) and AmpC-expressing strains, and shows greater in vitro activity compared to piperacillin-tazobactam in multiple Enterobacteriaceae and non-fermenters. It is intended for the treatment of infections caused by β-lactamase producing, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens[1][3][4].
