Overview

Blonanserin is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic used primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia. It acts as a potent antagonist at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, with additional but weaker antagonism at α1-adrenergic receptors. Blonanserin has improved tolerability compared to many other antipsychotics, with fewer extrapyramidal symptoms, less sedation, and reduced risk of hypotension or significant weight gain. It is approved in Japan and South Korea but not in the US or Europe. The drug’s efficacy against both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia is attributed to its receptor profile[1][5][6].
