Overview

Blood cardioplegia solution is a specialized cardioprotective agent used during cardiac surgery, such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), to induce and maintain elective cardiac arrest (cardioplegia). Developed and studied by the Fundacio Institut de Recerca de l'Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, this specific formulation is typically mixed with the patient's own blood to provide oxygenation and buffering during the ischemic period. The solution works primarily by delivering a high concentration of potassium ions to the myocardium, which depolarizes the myocyte cell membranes and arrests the heart in diastole. This reduces myocardial oxygen consumption and provides a stable surgical field. The inclusion of blood helps mitigate reperfusion injury and maintains better metabolic support compared to purely crystalloid solutions.
