Overview

Blood component A is a specific preparation of pre-storage leukoreduced Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs) investigated by the Università degli Studi di Ferrara for the treatment of transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia. This component is produced by first separating whole blood into its constituent parts—plasma, buffy coat, and red blood cells (RBCs)—and subsequently performing leukoreduction on the isolated RBC fraction. This method, often referred to as 'separation-then-filtration' or 'in-line filtration with buffy coat separation', is designed to provide high-quality RBCs while minimizing the presence of leukocytes, which are associated with adverse transfusion reactions and alloimmunization. In clinical studies, Blood component A is evaluated for its impact on transfusion indices, such as the frequency of transfusions and the total volume of blood required to maintain target hemoglobin levels in patients with chronic anemia.
